This lesson demonstrates how you can approach your shading layers from a storytelling perspective.

Scratch your surfaces with purpose, why dirt is gathered in particular crevices, and how decals can add story to your props.

Each stage in this shader layering was a LamaLayer with the mix controlled by either a hand-painted or procedural mask.

Once upon a time, there was a robot called OTTO who rolled off the production line all shiny and new, ready for work. He started all nice and clean.

Until one day, whilst helping fix a machine, a clumsy intern spilled a can of oil all over OTTO, ruining his clean, shiny metal.

OTTO, all oily and greasy, had no option but to go to the dreaded re-spray department. No robot ever wanted to go in there, as they always took pride in their shiny metal.

OTTO had to be re-sprayed in the factory default - grey.

Whilst he was waiting for his new paint to dry, some vandals broke in and decided to graffiti all over OTTO.

Since OTTO was now looking far worse for wear, he was left in the corner to rust.

And over time, he got forgotten about and just stood in the corner of the factory gathering dirt and dust.
